Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster packages two turn-based JRPGs from Square's PlayStation 2 era into a single collection. Final Fantasy X (2001) follows Tidus, a blitzball star pulled out of the dream city of Zanarkand into the world of Spira, where he joins the summoner Yuna on a pilgrimage to defeat the monster Sin. Final Fantasy X-2 (2003) returns two years later with Yuna, Rikku and Paine hunting spheres across Spira in a faster, job-changing sequel built on the Dressphere system. The HD Remaster rebuilds both games with updated character models, widescreen presentation, remastered music and the international-version content and bosses that were missing from the original Western PlayStation 2 releases, and it has been carried forward to new hardware ever since, including a Nintendo Switch 2 release on July 23, 2026.

Key Systems

  • Conditional Turn-Based Battle (CTB) - Final Fantasy X drops the series' Active Time Battle gauge for a visible turn order: every combatant is queued by Speed, and actions that hit harder or slower reshuffle the list, so delaying a turn is a real tactical choice.
  • The Sphere Grid - Character growth runs on a shared board of nodes rather than levels alone. Each character starts in a different region of the grid, and moving across it with Sphere Levels spends spheres to raise stats or unlocks new abilities; later on the grid can be crossed into another character's territory.
  • Overdrive - Every party member has a personal limit-break meter that charges in a different way, from Tidus acting on his own to Auron taking damage. Filling it unlocks that character's signature Overdrive set, including Tidus' Blitz Ace and Rikku's Mix.
  • Aeon Summoning - Yuna can call the Fayth's aeons into battle as temporary party members with their own HP, stats and Overdrives. Aeons absorb hits meant for the party, and Yuna's Grand Summon brings one in with a full Overdrive gauge.
  • Weapon Customisation and the Monster Arena - Weapons, armour and accessories are built by spending items on empty ability slots, which is where Auto-Life, Break Damage Limit and the rest of the endgame loadout comes from. Captured fiends can be handed to the Calm Lands Monster Arena to spawn optional bosses.
  • Active Time Battle with Dresspheres (Final Fantasy X-2) - The sequel returns to a real-time ATB gauge with a three-character party, and replaces fixed job roles with Dresspheres: each girl can change job mid-battle or between fights, keeping every learned ability of that sphere.
  • Garment Grids (Final Fantasy X-2) - Dresspheres are slotted into a Garment Grid, and passing through the grid's gates during battle unlocks additional spheres and bonuses, including the special 'change' forms such as Trigger Happy.
  • Blitzball and the Side Activities - Blitzball is a fully playable underwater team sport with its own league and tournaments, and Spira is filled with optional systems including chocobo racing, lightning dodging, the Butterfly Hunt, Cactuar Village and the Celestial Weapon quests.
