Tales of Arise
Tales of Arise is a 2021 action role-playing game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, and the seventeenth mainline entry in the Tales series. It is set on Dahna, a medieval world that has spent three centuries under the occupation of the technologically advanced planet Rena: the five realms of Dahna are ruled by Renan lords who strip their astral energy while the native Dahnans are worked as slaves. The story follows Alphen, a masked Dahnan who cannot feel pain and remembers nothing of his past, and Shionne, a Renan noblewoman cursed with thorns that injure anyone she touches, as they gather a party and topple the five lords one realm at a time. Combat is built on real-time action artes, Boost Attacks and Boost Strikes, and a Cure Point economy that ties healing to the caster instead of items, while characters grow through Titles earned across the story and side content. The base game launched on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Windows in September 2021, and the Beyond the Dawn expansion followed in November 2023, with the Beyond the Dawn Edition arriving on Nintendo Switch 2 in May 2026.
Key Systems
- Boost Attacks and Boost Strikes: Each party member owns a signature Boost Attack, such as Rinwell's spell-cancelling counter or Law's flinch-inducing rush, and landing them builds toward a Boost Strike, a cinematic partner finisher that ends a staggered enemy outright.
- Artes and the AG Economy: Combat artes and astral artes draw on the Artes Gauge instead of a mana pool, so damage rotation is about timing, aerial juggling and gauge recovery rather than resource conservation between fights.
- Cure Points (CP) and Camping: Healing artes are paid for from the healer's Cure Point pool shared across the party, which pushes players to rest at camps and plan bursts of healing rather than spam recovery mid-fight.
- Over Limit and Mystic Artes: Filling the Over Limit gauge during aggressive play grants temporary invulnerability and access to each character's Mystic Arte, the series' signature cinematic ultimate.
- Titles as Character Progression: Characters do not use class trees; instead they earn Titles from story events, side quests, cooking, fishing and battle mileage, and each Title grants permanent stat gains and unlocks new artes and skills.
- Dahna and Rena Duality: The plot pairs a slave-holding Renan ruling class with the Dahnan underclass, and the party's goal across the five realms is to break a three-hundred-year occupation rather than simply defeat a villain.
- Beyond the Dawn Expansion: The 2023 expansion adds a new story chapter set a year after the main campaign, centred on Nazamil, a child of mixed Dahnan and Renan heritage, along with new quests, new artes and a raised level ceiling.
- Skits and Sub-Quests: Skits are optional party conversations triggered in the field that carry much of the character writing, while sub-quests in every realm hand out Titles, recipes and crafting materials.
