Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter: World is a 2018 action role-playing game developed and published by Capcom, and the fifth mainline entry in the Monster Hunter series. It follows a Hunter of the Fifth Fleet, dispatched by the Guild to the New World, a vast unexplored continent where elder dragons migrate in a cycle the Guild wants to understand. The campaign is built around hunting large monsters across five interconnected locales, carving materials from them, and turning those materials into weapons and armor at the Astera smithy so that the next hunt is survivable. World streamlined the series for a global audience: seamless map traversal without loading zones, a full 14-weapon arsenal, monster tracking through footprints and scent, SOS flare co-op, and a living ecology in which monsters fight each other as readily as they fight the player. Its Iceborne expansion then carried the Hunter north to the frozen Hoarfrost Reach and the Guiding Lands, adding Master Rank, the Clutch Claw and a second endgame on top of the base campaign.

Key Systems

  • 14 Weapon Types: Every weapon class in the series returns, from the Great Sword, Long Sword and Charge Blade to the Insect Glaive, Switch Axe and the three ranged options, and each one carries a complete combo tree and a distinct resource or charge mechanic.
  • Seamless Locales and Monster Tracking: The New World's maps load without a break between zones, and the Scoutflies pick up footprints, scratches and scent trails so that tracking a monster is a route the player reads rather than a marker the game hands over.
  • Crafting at the Smithy: Every hunt feeds the Astera smithy, where monster parts become weapons in each of the 14 trees and armor sets whose skills define a build, with upgrades gated behind rarer parts from the same monster.
  • Armor Skills and Decorations: Armor pieces carry skill points that stack toward thresholds, and decorations socketed into slots fill out the same skills, so a finished build is usually a mix of crafted armor, a charm and slotted jewels.
  • Investigations and Tempered Monsters: Investigation quests roll bonus rewards and stricter conditions, and the endgame turns them into tempered hunts that drop streamstones for augmenting weapons and armor.
  • SOS Flares and Four-Player Co-op: Any quest can be opened to randoms or friends mid-hunt through an SOS flare, and the gathering hub keeps a lobby together between hunts.
  • Palicoes and Tailraiders: A custom Palico companion fights alongside the Hunter with its own gadget and gear, and Grimalkyne tribes recruited in each locale lend Tailraider support in the field.
  • Living Ecology: Large monsters roam, rest, feed and fight each other, and turf wars can decide a hunt before the player lands a clean hit, which is the design idea World is best remembered for.
  • Master Rank and the Clutch Claw: Iceborne adds a rank above high rank with new monster moves and gear, and the Clutch Claw lets a Hunter grapple onto a monster to tenderize a part, redirect it into a wall or fire slinger ammo directly into its face.
  • The Guiding Lands: Iceborne's endgame is a single expedition map whose regions level up independently as monsters are hunted there, unlocking tempered monsters, new materials and layered armour.
