Dune: Awakening

Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMO developed and published by Funcom, released on June 10, 2025 for Windows (early access June 5) with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions planned for September 22, 2026. Set on the desert world of Arrakis in an alternate timeline where the events of the original Dune novel never came to pass, players assume control of a Bene Gesserit undercover agent who must find the vanished Fremen and wake the Sleeper. Combining survival mechanics with MMO progression, the game spans four phases (Survive, Protect, Expand, Control) as players scavenge the wastes, harvest spice, craft gear, join House Atreides or House Harkonnen, and eventually gain influence over the world at the Landsraad. Built on Unreal Engine 5.

Key Systems

  • Four-Phase Progression: The game is divided into Survive, Protect, Expand and Control phases, advancing the player from a desperate everyman to the leader of a guild on Arrakis.
  • Survival Mechanics: Manage thirst and maintain stillsuits, endure sandstorms, quicksand, and daytime heat stroke, and avoid hostile Sardaukar night patrols while scavenging resources.
  • Resource Crafting & Shelter Building: Scavenge materials to craft gear and build shelters, though constructing an outpost incurs tribute taxes to the Emperor.
  • Spice Harvesting & Addictive Powers: Players compete to harvest and transport spice, the most valuable commodity in the Dune universe, and can grow addicted to it, unlocking spice-related powers.
  • Sandworm Danger: Sandworms constantly threaten players, who must move quietly to avoid drawing their attention; thumpers can lure a sandworm to be used tactically, but items and vehicles devoured are lost forever.
  • Overland & Ornithopter Travel: Outside the starting area, players access the Overland map and pilot ornithopters from a top-down perspective to reach distant locations.
  • House Factions: Join either House Atreides or House Harkonnen in the War of Assassins, unlocking faction-specific quests, NPCs, and special merchants.
  • Deep Desert PvP: A primarily player-versus-player environment hosting hundreds of players, ravaged by weekly Coriolis storms that reshape the map each week.
  • Endgame Landsraad Influence: At endgame, guilds spend their influence at the Landsraad to make world-affecting choices that shape the state of the game server.
  • Ecology Labs & Dungeons: Explore underground ecology labs, the game's dungeons, solo or co-op with other players.
