Once Upon a Katamari

Once Upon a Katamari is an action puzzle game developed by Monkeycraft and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, released on October 23, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows and Nintendo Switch, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following on October 8, 2026. The seventh main entry in the Katamari series sends the Prince rolling through the history of the world after a mysterious story scroll scatters it, with stages grouped into eras such as Edo Japan, the Jurassic Period, the Ice Age, Ancient Egypt and the American Frontier. Play keeps the series' two-stick rolling: each stick drives one side of the katamari, and anything smaller than the ball can be picked up, so a street that starts as an obstacle course ends the run as raw material. Every stage hides three crowns and crowns unlock further levels, while 68 cousins, 39 presents and 31 story movies fill out the collection. The headline addition is KatamariBall, an online competitive mode in which four players roll against each other to see who can gather the most.

Key Systems

  • Two-Stick Rolling: each analog stick drives one side of the katamari, so steering is tank-like rather than camera-relative, and the game also offers a simplified control scheme for players who want a single-stick feel.
  • Size-Threshold Pickups: every object has a size, and the katamari can only collect what it is big enough for, which turns each era's streets from obstacles into material as the ball grows.
  • Era-Based Campaign: the story scroll has scattered history, and levels are grouped by era, running from Edo Japan through the Jurassic Period, the Ice Age, Ancient Egypt and the American Frontier.
  • Objective Variety: stages mix size goals (As Large As Possible), timed goals (As Fast As Possible), themed collection goals such as Lots of Drinks, Lots of Gold and Lots of Dinosaurs, and size-constrained Perfect-Sized challenges.
  • Crown Gating: three crowns are hidden in every stage and collecting them is what unlocks the next levels, so each era has to be completed properly rather than rushed.
  • Cousin Collection: 68 cousins are hidden across the stages and two late levels only open once the roster is complete; found cousins become selectable playable characters.
  • Presents and Customisation: 39 presents are hidden in levels and the game supports face customisation parts, including three parts bundled with the standard edition.
  • KatamariBall: an online competitive mode for four players, playable against human opponents or CPU, where each player rolls for the biggest haul.
  • Collection Menu: 31 story movies and the crown, cousin and present lists are tracked from a single collection screen.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Port: released October 8, 2026 alongside the Rolling Live Highlights DLC, with mouse control support on the Switch 2 Joy-Con.
