Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Switch 2 Edition

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is Monolith Soft's 2017 action JRPG for the Nintendo Switch, re-released as a Switch 2 Edition on July 30, 2026. Set on the cloud sea of Alrest, where the last of humanity lives on the backs of giant Titans, the story follows Rex, a young salvager who becomes the Driver of the Aegis blade Pyra and is drawn into a war over the World Tree and the fate of the dying world. Combat pairs real-time auto-attacks with Driver Arts, elemental Blade Combos and a layered Chain Attack system built on the bond between Drivers and their Blades. The Switch 2 Edition brings the full base game to the new hardware with the version 2.0 quality-of-life updates applied, including the expanded map and navigation options introduced after launch.

Key Systems

  • Driver and Blade Bond: Every Driver fights alongside a Blade, and the pair shares one health pool, one Arts palette and one elemental identity. Blades are awakened from Core Crystals, each carrying its own weapon class, element, role and Affinity Chart.
  • Auto-attacks and Driver Arts: Characters auto-attack when in range to charge the three Driver Arts mapped to the face buttons. Arts are cancelled into each other for animation cancelling, and each Art has a cooldown plus positional bonuses for hitting from the side or back.
  • Driver Combos: Arts that carry Break, Topple, Launch and Smash can be chained into a full Driver Combo, holding an enemy down while the party piles on damage and extending the window for specials.
  • Blade Combos and elemental orbs: Specials of ascending levels from different elements can be chained into a Blade Combo, and a completed combo seals an elemental orb on the enemy. Elemental weaknesses and opposite elements let the party burst those orbs during Chain Attacks.
  • Chain Attacks: Once the party gauge is full, a Chain Attack lets every party member act in sequence with escalating damage bonuses. Bursting the elemental orbs sealed by Blade Combos extends the chain and multiplies the finishing damage.
  • Affinity Chart and trust: Each Blade has an Affinity Chart of nodes unlocked by using it in specific ways, raising trust and unlocking new Arts, skills and field abilities. Trust is the long-term progression layer behind every Blade.
  • Field Skills: Blades provide Field Skills such as Ancient Wisdom, Lockpicking and Focus, and the party needs specific skill levels to open chests and clear obstacles in the world, which turns Blade collection into exploration progression.
  • Merc Missions: Blades sent on Merc Missions gain trust and levels while the player is elsewhere, a passive progression system that lets a large Blade roster keep pace without being in the active party.
  • Pouch items and Blade Quests: Pouch items grant timed buffs to Drivers, while Blade Quests unlock through trust and reveal each rare Blade's story and exclusive rewards.
  • Tiger! Tiger! and Poppi: Tora's artificial Blade Poppi is upgraded by playing the Tiger! Tiger! mini-game for Ether Crystals, then spending them on Poppi's role, Arts and skills, making her the most customizable party member.
