Cronos: The New Dawn

Cronos: The New Dawn is a 2025 survival horror game developed and published by Bloober Team, the Krakow studio behind Layers of Fear, The Medium and the Silent Hill 2 remake, and built on Unreal Engine 5. It is set across two eras of the same ruined world: the Polish steel district of Nowa Huta in the 1980s, and a devastated future in which humanity has been all but erased. The player is a Traveler, an agent sent backwards through a time rift by an organisation known as the Collective to find survivors, harvest what the dead still carry, and change the outcome of the disaster. Combat is deliberately heavy and resource-starved, built around scarce ammunition, aimed shots, stagger and melee follow-through rather than run-and-gun shooting, and the Traveler can fuse with the remains of the fallen to draw out the essence they hold. It released on September 5, 2025 for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.

Key Systems

  • Two Eras, One World: the campaign alternates between the 1980s Nowa Huta steel district and a ruined future reached through a time rift, with the same locations revisited in both states and progress in one era unlocking routes in the other.
  • Traveler Missions: the player is a Traveler dispatched by the Collective, and each excursion into the past is framed as a salvage and reconnaissance run with its own objectives before the return window closes.
  • Essence Fusion: the Traveler can fuse with the bodies of the fallen, absorbing the essence they still hold, which turns corpse recovery into a core resource loop rather than a simple pickup.
  • Scarcity-Driven Combat: ammunition, healing and crafting stock are kept deliberately tight, so aimed shots, stagger, positioning and melee follow-through matter far more than sustained fire.
  • Weapon and Gear Crafting: recovered materials and parts are used to build, repair and upgrade firearms and protective gear between excursions, with the strongest options gated behind exploration rather than shop purchases.
  • Survival Horror Pacing: long exploration stretches, environmental puzzles and lore discovery are punctuated by short, punishing enemy encounters rather than continuous combat.
  • Monster Ecology: the transformed creatures that overrun both eras, known as Orphans, are fought as individual threats with readable attack patterns instead of endless arena waves.
