Esoteric Ebb

Esoteric Ebb is an isometric, tabletop-inspired CRPG developed by Christoffer Bodegård (studio Sudden Snail) and published by Raw Fury, released for Windows on March 3, 2026. Players take the role of The Cleric, an arcane cleric of Norvik who wakes in the Lichhouse mortuary and is drawn into a political conspiracy after an explosion destroys a tea shop in the district of Tolstad. The game is built as a Disco Elysium-style narrative RPG rather than a combat RPG: dice rolls over Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma drive dialogue, investigation and skill checks, and the Cleric's six abilities are personified as Chimes that talk to him. Its setting is described as post-Arcanepunk fantasy, with the city of Norvik divided into five magistrate-ruled districts on the Esoteric Coast.

Key Systems

  • Chimes and Ability Scores: the Cleric's six abilities (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma) double as talking Chimes that comment on the world and roll skill checks against fixed DCs.
  • Dice-Driven Dialogue: there is no conventional combat loop, so persuasion, investigation and progress are resolved through ability checks, with visible failure states that the Chimes narrate.
  • Subclass and Spell Progression: the Cleric starts as an Arcane Cleric, memorises spells rather than praying for them, and builds toward higher-level Divine, Arcane and Primal spells found in the world.
  • Equipment as Ability Modifiers: weapons, helmets, trinkets and literature occupy equipment slots and shift ability scores, so gear changes which checks a build can pass instead of adding flat damage.
  • Journal Encyclopaedia: the Journal tracks Skills, Spells, Esoterics, Religion, Politics, History, Geography, Nature, Language and Literature entries, each gated behind its own Chime DC.
  • District Politics: Norvik is split into five districts, each ruled by a magistrate appointed for ten to twelve years, and the conspiracy runs through the Party of Norvik, the Norvikan Resistance and the city's guilds.
