Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2 cover

Subnautica 2 is an action-adventure survival game developed and published by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, the sequel to 2018's Subnautica and the third full game in the series after 2021's Subnautica: Below Zero. Released into Early Access on May 14, 2026 for PC and Xbox, it strands the player on a wholly new alien ocean world that is not the original 4546B (now known as Ryley's World). The opening chapters follow a crew member of the Cicada, a Human reprinted years after a crashed colony collapsed, as they investigate the ruins of that settlement, repair a disabled Power Plant, and trace the mysterious NOA and the world-spanning World Tree. Gameplay couples survival gathering and crafting with modular seabase building, a single swappable-chassis Tadpole submersible, co-op for up to four players, and an ecosystem of scannable fauna punctuated by Leviathan-class predators, all built in Unreal Engine 5.

Key Systems

  • Modular Tadpole Submersible - A single submersible that adopts swappable chassis, from the fast Scout Ray configuration (about 10 m/s) to the Haul Rig that seats up to four players and carries extra cargo, so one vehicle fills every role.
  • Four-Player Co-op - The campaign and exploration can be played alone or cooperatively with up to four Reclamators, with resources and vehicle seating shared across the group.
  • Modular Seabase Building - The player constructs habitats from modular compartment parts, adding a Moonpool with a Tadpole Dock and Vehicle Fabricator, and later the Metal Farm that passively accumulates minerals from the surrounding water.
  • Scanner-Centric Discovery - A Scanner identifies fauna, flora, resources and wreckage to fill Databank entries and unlock blueprints, including the combination scanner-fabricator tool that must be built from scanned Repair Tools.
  • Survival Resource Loop - Oxygen, health and stamina must be managed while scavenging basic resources such as Titanium, Copper and Quartz from Raw Ore nodes to craft tools, equipment and base parts.
  • Tiered Fauna Ecosystem - Life is organised into Passive, Herbivore, Carnivore and Predator tiers topped by Leviathan-class creatures such as the Collector, Shiver and Void that patrol specific regions and destroy submersibles.
  • Biomod and Biolab Upgrades - Items such as the Air Bladder feed into a Biolab enhancement system, letting survivors improve traversal, stamina and survival capability over the course of the Early Access build.
  • Open-World Underwater Planet - Exploration is driven by oxygen and vehicle range rather than map markers, from the shallow Twisty Bridges and Kelp Forest down to the deep Dolerite Spires and the Out-of-Bounds Void regions.
