Gears of War: Reloaded

Gears of War: Reloaded is a 2025 remaster of the 2006 third-person shooter Gears of War, developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios. It rebuilds the original campaign and its classic multiplayer on modern technology with updated visuals, performance options, and a full campaign plus Versus package, and it was the first Gears of War release ever to ship on a PlayStation console. The story follows Marcus Fenix, freed from prison fourteen years after Emergence Day, as Delta Squad fights the Locust Horde across the ruined planet Sera and races to bring the Lightmass bomb to bear against General RAAM. The combat is defined by cover-based firefights, the Active Reload timing mechanic, the chainsaw-equipped Lancer, and a tight two-weapon loadout that made the original a genre-defining shooter.

Key Systems

  • Cover-Based Combat: Gears of War's defining system. Firing from, sliding between, and vaulting over low walls, crates, and rubble is the core defensive loop, and blind-firing from cover trades accuracy for safety while exposed.
  • Active Reload: The signature reload minigame. Hitting the moving marker in the correct window when reloading speeds the animation up and grants a temporary damage bonus, while missing it jams the weapon and costs precious seconds mid-firefight.
  • Roadie Run: A low, hunched sprint that trades weapon readiness for speed, letting Gears cross open ground fast while keeping the camera low and the character hard to hit, at the cost of any ability to shoot mid-run.
  • Chainsaw Bayonet and Executions: The Lancer's mounted chainsaw turns melee into a duel that can be interrupted by an enemy's own rev, and downed opponents can be finished with a brutal stomp, chainsaw, or meat-shield grab that pins a live Locust body in front of incoming fire.
  • Two-Weapon Loadout: Players carry two weapons plus grenades at a time, so every firefight begins with a choice about what to leave behind. Power weapons such as the Boomshot, Torque Bow, and Longshot are picked up from the ground and dropped again on death.
  • Hammer of Dawn: A satellite-directed orbital beam that can be called down on marked targets, burning anything inside its radius. Between strikes the targeting laser has to be charged, making the timing of each call a tactical decision.
  • Kryll Darkness Mechanic: On night missions the surface light becomes a resource. Swarms of Kryll strip the skin from anyone standing outside an illuminated area, so players move from lamp to lamp and can shoot out lights to turn the dark against the Locust.
  • Co-operative Campaign: The entire campaign supports two-player co-op, with a second player dropping in as Dom while the host plays Marcus, sharing difficulty and progression through the story.
  • Versus Multiplayer: The classic competitive suite of round-based team modes, including Warzone, Execution, Assassination, Annex, King of the Hill, and Guardian, played on fan-favourite arenas such as Gridlock, Canals, and Clocktower.
  • Modern Presentation Features: The remaster targets high frame rates and 4K output on current hardware, adds cross-play and cross-progression between platforms, and offers a range of accessibility and control options alongside the original tuning.

Reception

Press
The 2006 original is widely cited as one of the most influential shooters of its generation, credited with popularising cover-based combat, the Active Reload mechanic, and co-operative campaign play, and the 2025 remaster was covered as a faithful rebuild aimed at preserving that design.
Legacy
Gears of War helped define the third-person shooter template of the seventh console generation and established the Gears franchise; Reloaded brought the original campaign and its multiplayer to modern platforms and, for the first time in the series, to PlayStation hardware.
