Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is Square Enix's expanded edition of the 2020 action role-playing remake of Final Fantasy VII, rebuilt around real-time ATB combat, a weapon upgrade grid, and the materia system. The story follows Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER turned mercenary, and the eco-terrorist cell Avalanche as they bomb Midgar's mako reactors and uncover the Shinra Electric Power Company's plan to drop the Sector 7 plate on the slums below. Intergrade pairs the full Remake campaign with the INTERmission episode, a two-chapter side story in which the Wutai ninja Yuffie Kisaragi and her partner Sonon infiltrate Shinra's Advanced Weaponry Division. The edition first shipped on PlayStation 5 in 2021 and reached Windows the same year, and the January 2026 release brings it to Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
Key Systems
- Hybrid ATB Combat - Each character builds ATB charges with normal attacks and spends them on abilities, spells, and items while the action keeps running, so positioning and timing matter as much as menu choices.
- Pressure and Stagger - Focused attacks and elemental weaknesses push enemies into Pressure, and damage dealt during that window builds the Stagger gauge that leaves bosses briefly helpless and takes extra damage.
- Materia System - Weapons and armor carry linked and unlinked materia slots, and equipped Magic, Support, Command, and Summon materia define each character's spells, elemental coverage, and utility.
- Weapon Upgrade Grid - Every weapon has its own upgrade board unlocked with SP earned from battles and manuscripts, trading attack, magic, and defense nodes against slot expansion and passive bonuses.
- Unique Abilities and Modes - Cloud switches between Operator and Punisher stance, Barret overcharges his gun arm, Tifa chains martial combos, Aerith anchors spells through wards, and Yuffie swaps elemental ninjutsu on the fly.
- Limit Breaks - A separate gauge fills from damage taken and stagger windows, and each character's limit break is a high-cost finisher rather than a normal ability.
- Chapter Structure and Side Content - The campaign runs through numbered chapters with optional quests, colosseum fights, Chadley's battle intel reports, and weapon manuscripts hidden across Midgar.
- INTERmission Episode - A separate two-chapter campaign adds Yuffie and Sonon, the Happy Turtle collectible hunt, a new combat simulator, and its own weapon upgrade paths for the pair.
