The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure
The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure is a turn-based Japanese role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom and the second half of the Crossbell arc, released in Japan for the PlayStation Portable in 2011 and brought to the West by NIS America in 2023. Lloyd Bannings and the Special Support Section return months after the events of Trails from Zero, but where the first game investigated a city that was still standing, the sequel has to hold one together: the rivalry between the Erebonian Empire and the Calvard Republic turns into open interference, the bank and the independence movement push Crossbell toward declaring itself a nation, and the conspiracy behind the state's ruins finally names itself. Combat is the Crossbell arc's system at full stretch, with Crafts and S-Crafts paid for in CP, Combo Crafts for paired characters, the Burst gauge and Team Rush for whole-party turns, and Orbal Arts assembled from quartz lines around each character's Master Quartz. A cast that grows to include Noel Seeker, Wazy Hemisphere and Rixia Mao, and a run of boss fights built around the state's own war machines, make this the arc's hardest and most political entry. Current-generation PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 editions released on 10 September 2026.
Key Systems
- Crafts, S-Crafts and the CP economy. Every member of the unit fights with character-specific Crafts that spend CP, plus a signature S-Craft that needs a full gauge, and an S-Break lets a character cut into the turn order to fire that finisher the instant the fight turns.
- Combo Crafts, Burst and Team Rush. Paired characters unlock joint attacks, a shared Burst gauge lets the whole party act outside the turn order, and Team Rush concentrates the active party into one massed strike, which is what keeps a four-person police unit competitive against the arc's war machines.
- Orbal Arts, EP and quartz lines. Spells live on each character's orbment rather than in a fixed spell list: quartz slotted along a line combine their element values to unlock Arts, and the same quartz gives different characters different magic, so party building is an equipment problem.
- Master Quartz. The central orbment unit grants a character-defining passive effect and levels up as the party fights, and Trails to Azure is where the system carries the later tiers of Master Quartz and the higher level ceiling that come with being the arc's second and harder half.
- Detective Points, requests and the SSS rank. The Special Support Section still works off a request board, and police requests, support requests and hidden tasks award Detective Points that raise the unit's public standing and gate rewards, a Crossbell counterpart to the Bracer Guild's point system.
- Crossbell's independence crisis. The sequel raises the stakes from city policing to statehood: the Crois administration moves on the bank, the empire and the republic mass on the borders, and the mysterious power under Crossbell becomes the thing every faction in the arc is actually bidding for.
- An expanded playable cast. Noel Seeker, Wazy Hemisphere and Rixia Mao join the unit over the course of the story, and returning guests from Liberl fight alongside it, so the party a player finishes the game with is much wider than the four detectives the arc started with.
- Modern port quality of life. The PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 editions carry the refresh features of the later Japanese re-releases, including a high-speed mode that accelerates field movement, battles and dialogue.
