Deltarune

Deltarune is a turn-based role-playing game created by Toby Fox, the developer behind Undertale, built in GameMaker Studio 2 and featuring a soundtrack composed by the creator himself. Set in and around the small town of Hometown, the story follows Kris, a human schoolchild who, together with the monsters Susie and Ralsei, is drawn into Dark Worlds born of mystical Dark Fountains, arriving in a land where Lightners and Darkners alike must choose between peace and destruction. Combat blends Undertale-style bullet-dodging with a turn-based menu system in which enemies can be fought, but do not award EXP, so sparing and recruiting adversaries is a viable and encouraged path. Worked on an episodic model, the first two chapters were released free of charge in 2018 and 2021, with Chapters 3 and 4 arriving together on September 15, 2025 for Windows, macOS, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.

Key Systems

  • ACT and Mercy Battle System: Deltarune's turn-based battles present a menu of Fight, ACT, Item, Spare, and Defend options, where enemies cannot be killed for experience, and a combination of ACT actions, commentary, and recruitment is required to spare monsters and unlock secret endings.
  • Bullet-Hell Dodging: When attacking, enemies fire patterned projectiles the player must navigate through a controllable heart-shaped SOUL in a mini bullet-hell phase, drawn from the action battle styling of Undertale.
  • Recruitable Party Members: Kris, Susie, and Ralsei fight as a party with distinct roles, and certain Lightner characters such as Noelle Holiday can be recruited as optional party members in specific chapters, each with their own magic.
  • Dark Worlds and the Knight: The Dark Worlds are pocket dimensions opened by the Mysterious Knight through Dark Fountains; closing fountains and convincing the Neighbor of the Light World to coexist is the crux of the story.
  • No EXP Design: Monsters are never defeated for experience, so combat rewards creativity, mercy, and recruitment over grinding, shaping a pacifist-friendly progression across all chapters.
  • Episodic Release Structure: The game's chapters are released in installments, with Chapters 1 and 2 free and Chapters 3 and 4 sold together in 2025, with more chapters planned.
