Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition (Switch 2 Edition)

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is Monolith Soft's enhanced version of its 2015 Wii U open-world RPG, released for Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2025 and brought to Nintendo Switch 2 as a Switch 2 Edition on February 19, 2026. After Earth is destroyed in a war between humanity and the alien Ganglion, the survivors flee aboard the ark ships and the White Whale crash-lands on the unexplored planet Mira, where the city of New Los Angeles is raised inside the wreck and the BLADE organisation is formed to survey the world and defend the last of humanity. The player creates a silent BLADE recruit who joins Elma and Lin, explores five enormous continents, earns a licence to pilot the giant Skell mechs, and hunts for the ship's missing Lifehold while the Ganglion closes in. Combat runs on real-time Arts with Overdrive chaining, Soul Voice prompts and class-based weapon pairings, and the Definitive Edition adds new story content and quality-of-life improvements over the Wii U original.

Key Systems

  • BLADE and FrontierNav: The player joins one of BLADE's eight divisions and installs Data Probes at FrontierNav sites across Mira. Probe types such as Mining, Research, Battle, Storage, Booster and Duplicator probes convert surveyed land into Miranium income, gathering nodes and combat buffs, which makes exploration the backbone of the game's economy.
  • Skells: Once the party earns a Skell licence, they can pilot the game's giant mechs. Skells are assembled with shoulder, back, sidearm and arm weapons, run on fuel refined from Miranium, are covered by insurance-funded repairs, and eventually unlock a flight module that opens up the whole planet to aerial travel.
  • Overdrive and Soul Voices: Chaining Arts and answering allies' Soul Voice prompts builds the Overdrive gauge, which extends damage buffs and shortens Art cooldowns for as long as it is sustained. Tension Points earned in battle pay for the party's strongest Arts.
  • Class System: Crossing the Drifter, Striker, Commando and Enforcer trees unlocks sixteen classes, each built around a pair of weapon types and each granting its own Arts and passive Skills as ranks are earned. Class ranks carry over between characters, so late-game builds mix Arts from several classes at once.
  • Open World Exploration: Mira is divided into five enormous continents and is open from the first hour, with a day and night cycle, weather that changes what spawns, roaming Tyrants and fast travel through the FrontierNav map.
  • Online Squad Play: Players join an online Squad, clear Squad Tasks alongside other members and take on the Global Nemesis, a shared boss that every squad member damages over time.

Accolades
The original was praised for the scale and verticality of Mira, the freedom of Skell flight and its dense systems, and criticised for a thin main story and heavy loadout management. The Definitive Edition was widely received as the most accessible version of the game.
