Valor Mortis
Valor Mortis is a first-person action role-playing game developed by One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner, and published by Lyrical Games. It is set in an alternate history of the French Revolution in which Napoleon's war never truly ended and a plague turned his soldiers into monsters. The player controls William Dowsett, a loyal soldier who wakes on a corpse-strewn battlefield with part of his memory missing and a plague-born power in his blood, and who sets out to unravel the conspiracy behind the Grande Armee's affliction. Combat is a deliberate first-person take on the Soulslike formula, built on timing-based parries, stamina-managed melee, black-powder firearms and off-hand Transmutations cast from infected corpses, with progression routed through a character skill tree and socketed Ambers rather than armour sets. It was released on October 13, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, including a day-one launch on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
Key Systems
- First-Person Soulslike Combat: every fight is read from a first-person view and resolved through timed parries, stamina-managed swings, dodges and short punish windows, with enemy telegraphs replacing the third-person camera reads of the genre's usual template.
- Transmutations: three off-hand plague powers, Fire, Stasis and Shield, cast from the infected dead instead of equipped as spells. They are upgraded along their own material lines and double as world tools, since Fire burns away the dry yellow nephtoglobin walls that block optional routes.
- Ambers and the Character Tree: progression is not armour-based. Character levels feed a skill tree of perks such as Maximum Endurance, Melee Damage and Physical Resistance, while 29 Amber effects can be socketed into five slots that unlock at player levels 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9.
- Six-Weapon Arsenal: three blades (Saber, Rapier, Claymore) and three black-powder firearms (Pistol, Blunderbuss, Musket) are upgraded separately with blade and firearm materials of four rarity tiers, so the game rewards committing to a small loadout rather than hoarding gear.
- Lanterns and the Abandoned Church: 49 Lanterns act as checkpoints and fast-travel anchors across the campaign's regions, while the Abandoned Church serves as the hub where the merchants James, Louis and Lucjan sell upgrades for Catalysts.
- Plague Conspiracy Narrative: William's missing memory, the voice of Napoleon in his head and the Shrike's running commentary frame an eleven-chapter hunt through battlefields, villages, catacombs and a final descent into Entropy.
