Path of Exile 2

Path of Exile 2 is a free-to-play action role-playing game developed and published by Grinding Gear Games, and the long-awaited sequel to the 2013 dungeon-crawler Path of Exile. Set in the decaying fantasy world of Wraeclast, it follows a new exiled hero as they fight the corruption that has gripped the continent, hunting the Count and other corrupted lords while unearthing a deeper, more personal war. Players build characters around a huge passive skill tree, six starting character classes (each with advanced Ascendancy specializations), and a skill-gem system that sockets Active and Support gems to craft bespoke abilities. Combat is slower and more methodical than its predecessor, built around dodge-rolling, telegraphed boss patterns, and dual-specialized weapon sets rather than pure screen-clearing speed. Released into early access in late 2024 on PC, it launched for full release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S with cross-play, seasonal leagues, and a deep itemization and currency-crafting endgame.

Key Systems

  • Skill Gem System: Spells and attacks are granted by socketing Active Skill gems, each of which can be linked to Support gems that alter its behavior, damage, or utility, letting players build bespoke abilities rather than unlocking fixed skills.
  • Six Ascendancy Classes: Players begin as one of six classes (Warrior, Ranger, Witch, Sorceress, Monk, Mercenary) and later specialize into advanced Ascendancy subclasses that grant identity-defining passive and notable bonuses.
  • Huge Passive Skill Tree: A sprawling tree of hundreds of passive nodes grants raw stats, keystone-defining conversions, and specialization clusters, allowing near-limitless character customization.
  • Dual-Specialization Weapon Sets: Players can equip two weapon sets, each with its own assigned skills, and swap between them on the fly to adapt to different enemies and situations.
  • Conservative, Readable Combat: Compared to the original, combat is more deliberate and impactful, built around dodge-rolling, telegraphed enemy and boss attacks, crowd positioning, and resource management.
  • Currency-Based Crafting: The game has no gold shop economy; powerful crafting is driven by a currency-item economy where orbs reroll and augment item properties, with trading between players through a secure market.
  • Free-to-Play Live Service: Launches free-to-play at full release, monetized through cosmetic microtransactions and stash tabs, and updated through a seasonal league cadence.
  • Cross-Play & Cross-Progression: The full release unifies PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S players with shared progression.
