Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Rise is a 2021 action role-playing game developed and published by Capcom, and the sixth mainline Monster Hunter title. It moves the series from the New World to Kamura Village, a mountain settlement whose Rampage defence is a yearly ritual against waves of monsters driven out of the surrounding wilds by the twin serpents Ibushi and Narwa. Rise rebuilt the hunt around mobility: the Wirebug gives every Hunter two recharging aerial charges for wall running, gap closing and Silkbind Attacks, and the Palamute lets the player ride a mount through the maps instead of walking them. Every one of the 14 weapon types returns with a Switch Skill loadout that changes how a weapon plays, and the game adds Wyvern Riding, Rampage quests and endemic life that can be picked up and used as weapons. Its Sunbreak expansion carried the story to the Kingdom outpost of Elgado, added Master Rank, the Switch Skill Swap and the Anomaly endgame.

Key Systems

  • Wirebug Mobility: Two recharging Wirebug charges let a Hunter wall run, swing across gaps, recover from a knockdown and launch aerial attacks, which makes traversal and repositioning part of the combat rather than the walk between fights.
  • Silkbind Attacks and Switch Skills: Every weapon carries Wirebug-driven Silkbind Attacks plus a set of Switch Skills, and the player equips two or three of them per weapon, so two Hunters with the same weapon can be playing different movesets.
  • 14 Weapon Types: The full series arsenal returns, from Great Sword, Long Sword and Charge Blade to Insect Glaive, Switch Axe and the three gunner classes, each with its own gauge, combo tree and Rise-specific Silkbind kit.
  • Wyvern Riding: Wirebug silk can be latched onto a monster to steer it, slam it into walls and drive it into other monsters, turning the map's residents into a temporary resource instead of only a threat.
  • Rampage Quests: Base Rise's endgame is a tower-defence mode in which a squad mans turrets, ballistae and dragonators against waves of monsters led by an Apex, with installations placed between waves.
  • Endemic Life as Gear: The maps are stocked with creatures the Hunter can catch and carry, from the Puppet Spider that forces a Wyvern Ride to the Stinkmink that lures monsters and the elemental beetles that act as one-shot buffs.
  • Buddies: Palicoes and Palamutes fight alongside the Hunter, the Palamute doubles as a mount, and both are recruited, equipped and trained at the Buddy Plaza between hunts.
  • Kamura Hub and Dango: Kamura Village holds the smithy, the Buddy Plaza, the merchant and the dango shop, and the canteen's dango skewers provide the meal buffs that replace World's platters.
  • Master Rank and Switch Skill Swap: Sunbreak adds a rank above high rank and the Switch Skill Swap, which lets a Hunter hold two Switch Skill loadouts and swap them mid-combo, with Silkbind moves bound to the swap.
  • Follower Quests and Anomaly Investigations: Sunbreak's post-campaign loop pairs the Hunter with story NPCs in Follower Quests and sends them into Anomaly Investigations, where afflicted monsters drop materials for Qurio crafting and weapon augmentation.
