Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon cover

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an open-world action role-playing game developed by Questline and published by Awaken Realms, set in a dark fantasy reimagining of Arthurian legend. Set in the same universe as the Tainted Grail board game (created by Krzysztof Piskorski) and the 2020 deck-building roguelike Tainted Grail: Conquest, the game casts the player as a plague-stricken prisoner freed by the undying warrior Caradoc and bound to a fragment of Arthur Pendragon's soul. Set six hundred years after Arthur conquered the island of Avalon from the four-armed Fore-Dwellers and suppressed the shapeless Wyrdness with Merlin's menhir totems, the player hunts the fragments of Arthur's soul bound to Excalibur and his crown while Kamelot spirals toward war with the Dál Riata tribes as the Red Death returns. Gameplay blends first-person (or optional third-person) melee, ranged, and magic combat with a large open world, over two hundred side quests, crafting, alchemy, fishing, and faction-influenced branching narrative; a Wyrdnight phenomenon intensifies the Wyrdness at night and summons stronger enemies.

Key Systems

  • Archetype vs Freeform Builds - At character creation an interrogation sequence grants starting stat bonuses and shapes the archetype (Warrior, Archer, Mage, Rogue, or Classless). Classes are not locked; builds evolve freely through leveling for a hybrid, Elder-Scrolls-inspired progression.
  • First-Person / Third-Person Combat - Primarily first-person melee, ranged, and magic combat with an optional third-person mode. Players can two-hand a single weapon or dual-wield one-handed weapons.
  • Wyrdness and Menhirs - The sprawling primal force that created Avalon's monsters and domains, kept in check by Merlin's menhir totems. Its spread drives the plot, and traversal of Wyrd-touched areas shapes exploration.
  • Wyrdnight Phenomenon - At night the Wyrdness intensifies, summoning stronger enemies into the open world and making dynamic travel both more dangerous and more rewarding.
  • Crafting and Alchemy - Broad survival systems including weapon and armor crafting, alchemy, cooking, fishing, house decoration, and farming that support long-form open-world play.
  • Branching Faction Narrative - Over two hundred side quests with player decisions altering relationships and outcomes for factions including Kamelot, the Dál Riata tribes, the Horns of the South, and Cuanacht.
  • Arthur's Soul Fragments - The player collects fragments of Arthur's soul bound to Excalibur, his shield, and his crown, each revealing the king's morally complex past and driving toward multiple endings.
