Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is a 2025 tactical role-playing game from Square Enix and a fully voiced, visually rebuilt remaster of the 1997 PlayStation classic and its 2007 War of the Lions re-release. Set in the medieval kingdom of Ivalice, it follows Ramza Beoulve, a noble cadet who uncovers a conspiracy between the Church of Glabados and the Lucavi demons amid the War of the Lions, a brutal succession conflict between two great noble houses. Battles play out on three-dimensional grid maps in an Active Time-style turn order, and a deep job system lets units learn hundreds of abilities, carry skills between jobs, and be tuned through the hidden Brave and Faith personality stats. The Ivalice Chronicles adds English and Japanese voice acting, an edited localization, a new Squire difficulty, fast-forward and autosave, expanded camera controls, and a Classic mode that preserves the original presentation, while keeping the original's branching job tree, mercenary recruitment, and branching recruitment and poaching metagame.

Key Systems

  • Job System: units change freely between more than thirty jobs, each with its own abilities, stat growth and equipment, and skills learned in one job can be equipped as another job's secondary command set.
  • Turn-Based Grid Combat: battles play out on three-dimensional terrain in an Active Time-style turn order, where facing, height and Charge Time decide who acts and how hard they hit.
  • Brave and Faith: two hidden personality stats govern reaction and support ability success, magic potency, and several status and support effects, and can be raised or lowered by story choices and specific abilities.
  • Job Points and Ability Learning: every action earns JP that unlocks a job's skills, and learned abilities carry over between jobs as secondary commands, reaction, support and movement skills.
  • Zodiac Compatibility: each unit has a Zodiac sign and gender that subtly raise or lower damage, hit rate and status success between attacker and target.
  • Squire Difficulty and Modern Options: The Ivalice Chronicles adds a lower-difficulty Squire setting, fully voiced cutscenes, fast-forward, mid-battle autosave, an expanded camera zoom and angle, and a Classic mode that restores the original visuals.
  • Recruitment and Poaching: Orator and Mediator abilities recruit enemy units, while poaching monster hides at the fur shop unlocks rare gear, feeding a long-tail progression loop.
