Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a single-player action role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts, the fourth mainline entry in the Dragon Age series and a direct sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition. Players create Rook, a new hero recruited by Varric Tethras to stop the elven gods Solas, Elgar'nan, and Ghilan'nain after the Dread Wolf's ritual tears open the Veil. The campaign is built around assembling a team of seven companions, each tied to one of six factions, and rebuilding those factions' strength before the final confrontation, while combat pairs class abilities with companion combos, detonations, and a shared ability wheel. The game released on October 31, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, running on the Frostbite engine with a score co-composed by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe.
Key Systems
- Six Faction Character Creation - Rook's origin is chosen from the Antivan Crows, Grey Wardens, Lords of Fortune, Mourn Watch, Shadow Dragons, or Veil Jumpers, which sets their backstory, starting buffs, dialogue options, and casual outfit.
- Seven Companions, One Team - Neve, Harding, Bellara, Lucanis, Davrin, Taash, and Emmrich each have a fixed class and faction, their own skill tree, gear, companion questline, and romance route, and two of them accompany Rook into every mission.
- Real-Time Combat with a Pause-Free Ability Wheel - Rook fights in real time with light and heavy attacks, a dodge, and a parry, while the ability wheel lets players spend Rook's and both companions' abilities mid-fight without stopping the action.
- Primers and Detonators - Companion and class abilities apply status primers such as Sundered, Overwhelmed, and Necrosis, and a matching detonator ability consumes them for burst damage, which is the core of party synergy.
- Faction Strength and Reputation - Completing quests and companion storylines raises each faction's strength rating, which gates better faction merchants, war table assets, and the ending's outcome for that faction.
- Three Classes and Nine Specializations - Warrior, Rogue, and Mage each split into three specializations (Champion, Reaper, Slayer; Duelist, Saboteur, Veil Ranger; Evoker, Death Caller, Spellblade) that unlock deep into the skill tree.
- The Lighthouse and the Crossroads - The Lighthouse serves as the party's hub between missions, while the Crossroads and its eluvians provide fast travel between regions, including the elven archive puzzles and the Caretaker's upgrades.
- Gear Upgrades and Enchantments - Weapons and armor are upgraded with materials at the Caretaker's workshop and slotted with enchantments that can be swapped freely, and unique items carry fixed traits rather than random rolls.
