Diablo IV

Diablo IV is a 2023 action role-playing dungeon crawler developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, the fourth main installment in the Diablo series. Set in the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary decades after the events of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, the game follows the return of Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred, who seeks to tear down the ancient weakened hierarchy of Heaven and Hell and reshape Sanctuary in her image. Players forge a customizable character across five base classes (Barbarian, Rogue, Sorcerer, Necromancer, and Druid) and venture through an open-shared world of five regions, combining hack-and-slash combat, deep itemization and loot chase, customizable skill trees, and a live-service seasonal model. The launch received generally favorable reviews for its atmosphere, open world, combat, and presentation, and has been expanded through the Vessel of Hatred expansion (2024) and the Lord of Hatred expansion (2026), which add the Spiritborn, Paladin, and Warlock classes, the Nahantu and Skovos regions, and new endgame systems.

Key Systems

  • Five Base Classes and Skill Trees — Players choose among the Barbarian, Rogue, Sorcerer, Necromancer, and Druid, each with a branching skill tree of active skills, passives, and upgrades spent through a point-based system that drives build customization.
  • Open Shared World and Five Regions — The persistent, open Sanctuary is divided into Fractured Peaks, Scosglen, Dry Steppes, Kehjistan, and Hawezar, which players explore alongside others, taking on Strongholds, world bosses, and open-world events.
  • Itemization and Loot Chase — Diablo's signature gear loop drives progression through randomized item drops with affixes and legendary powers, augmented by the Codex of Power, upgrading at the blacksmith, and endgame item refinement.
  • Endgame and Seasonal Model — After the campaign, players push World Tiers, Nightmare Dungeons, Helltide, the Capstone challenges, and seasonal mechanics in a live-service structure of quarterly seasons and the battle-pass-style Seasonal Journey.
  • The Daughter of Hatred Story — The campaign pits the wanderer against Lilith and her machinations across Sanctuary, joined by the Horadric scholars Neyrelle, Lorath Nahr, and Donan, and culminating in the shattering of the Worldstone and the start of the Age of Hatred.
  • Vessel of Hatred Expansion (2024) — The first expansion added the Spiritborn class, the Nahantu jungle region, Pale Hand mercenaries, the Dark Citadel co-op dungeon, the Kurast Undercity, and runewords.
  • Lord of Hatred Expansion (2026) — The second expansion adds the Paladin and Warlock classes, the new region of Skovos, a raised level and Paragon ceiling, and deepened loot refinement, continuing Neyrelle and Mephisto's Age of Hatred arc.
