Yakuza 0 Director's Cut

Yakuza 0 is an open-world action-adventure brawler developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by Sega, originally released in 2015 in Japan and 2017 in the West, and reissued for Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025 and for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC on December 8, 2025 as Yakuza 0 Director's Cut. A prequel to the long-running Like a Dragon series, it is set in December 1988 at the height of Japan's bubble economy and follows two protagonists: Kazuma Kiryu, a young Dojima Family enforcer framed for a murder tied to a single contested plot of land in Kamurocho, and Goro Majima, exiled to Osaka and ordered to kill a blind woman to earn his way back into the Shimano Family. Combat is a free-roaming beat 'em up built on switchable fighting styles, environmental weapon pickups and cinematic Heat Actions, broken up by two large management side games, Real Estate Royale for Kiryu and Cabaret Club Czar for Majima. The Director's Cut packages the full game with additional cutscenes for its console and PC release.

Key Systems

  • Style Switching Combat: Kiryu cycles between Brawler, Rush, Beast and the Dragon of Dojima styles, while Majima switches between Thug, Breaker, Slugger and Mad Dog, each with its own moveset, speed and crowd-control profile.
  • Heat Actions: landing hits and grabbing enemies fills the Heat gauge, which is spent on context-sensitive cinematic finishers that use walls, railings, bicycles, signs and other street furniture.
  • Two Protagonists, Two Cities: the campaign alternates between Kiryu in Tokyo's Kamurocho and Majima in Osaka's Sotenbori, each with its own hub layout, side content and supporting cast.
  • Real Estate Royale: Kiryu builds a property empire district by district, hiring managers, upgrading shops and defending turf from rival billionaires to grow a passive income stream.
  • Cabaret Club Czar: Majima runs a hostess club, recruiting and training staff, matching hostesses to customer types and competing against rival clubs in timed service battles.
  • 1988 Period Sandbox: the bubble-era setting drives the look of both cities, the money-flaunting story and a dense minigame suite spanning karaoke, Pocket Circuit racing, arcades, batting cages, gambling and hostess clubs.

Press
Widely praised as one of the strongest entries in the series for its dual protagonists, 1980s setting, story pacing and the depth of its side content, with criticism mainly aimed at the size of its minigame and cutscene load.
