Valheim Wiki
Valheim
Valheim is a Viking survival and base-building game for one to ten players, developed by Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Publishing, built in Unity and set in a procedurally generated tenth world of Norse cosmology. Players take the role of a slain warrior dropped into a hostile purgatory, then harvest, craft, build and sail their way through a fixed order of biomes while hunting the Forsaken, the monstrous guardians that Odin wants removed from the world. Each biome gates the next through its resources and its guardian: defeating a Forsaken claims a Forsaken Power and the crafting material that opens the following tier. The 1.0 release on September 9, 2026 ended five years of Early Access, added the Deep North as the eighth and final land biome, and brought the Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla dungeons, the Bloodgold and Nord weapon tier, new creatures, the world boss Kall Fimbulbringer, and crossplay between PC and consoles.
Key Systems
- Biome Progression: the world is split into eight land biomes plus the Ocean, and each one gates the next through its resources. Gear tiers run from flint, stone, bronze and iron through silver, black metal, carapace and eitr, flametal, and finally Bloodgold, so survival in a new biome is earned by crafting rather than by levelling.
- Forsaken Bosses and Powers: every biome hides one summonable Forsaken guardian. Killing it claims its trophy, unlocks the next tier of crafting, and grants a Forsaken Power that can be triggered on a cooldown, such as Eikthyr's run and jump boost or Moder's tailwind for sailing.
- Base Building and Structural Stability: building is free-form and physics-aware, so beams, posts and foundations carry weight. Shelter, fire, ventilation for smoke and the comfort of the surrounding furnishings all feed into the rested state that grants a bonus to health and stamina regeneration.
- Skills That Level Through Use: skills such as Run, Jump, Blocking, Bows, Swords, Knives, Polearms and Elemental Magic improve as they are practised, and the character loses a share of them on death, which makes dying expensive in both gear and proficiency.
- Food, Mead and the Rest Loop: three food slots feed health and stamina pools, cooking upgrades the meals, and meads act as instant cures or temporary buffs. Managing food uptime and the rested state is the core of every fight and every long voyage.
- Combat and Stamina Management: attacks, blocks, parries and dodge rolls all cost stamina, so fights are won by spacing, timing and parrying rather than by trading hits. Weapons have distinct movesets, secondary attacks and damage types, and weapon quality is raised at a Forge or Black Forge.
- Taming, Farming and Ranching: boars, wolves and lox can be trapped, tamed and bred for materials, and farms grow carrots, turnips, onions, barley, flax and vines once the matching biome seeds are found, feeding both cooking and crafting.
- Sailing and Exploration: rafts, karves and longships open the Ocean, where wind direction decides speed and where serpents and leviathans patrol. Portals link distant bases, which keeps the exploration of the far biomes practical.
- Deep North Endgame (1.0): the final biome adds Bloodgold and Frostcores, the Nord weapon tier finished in the Frost Foundry, the Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla dungeons, new wildlife and monsters, and the world boss Kall Fimbulbringer.
- Co-op and Crossplay: worlds support up to ten players on player-hosted or dedicated servers, and 1.0 introduced crossplay between PC and console players.
