Tales of Xillia Remastered

Tales of Xillia Remastered is a remastered release of the 2011 PlayStation 3 action RPG Tales of Xillia, developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC. The original game introduced the twin-protagonist structure that the series later reused, letting players follow either Jude Mathis, a bookish medical student, or Milla Maxwell, the earthly vessel of the Lord of Spirits, through the same events from two very different viewpoints. Set in Rieze Maxia, a world where humans and spirits share the flow of mana, the story follows the pair as they uncover why the spirits are withdrawing from humanity, a schism that pitches them against the militarised kingdom of Auj Oule, the rival realm of Rashugal, and the machinations of a second world beyond the rift. Combat is a real-time action system built around chaining attacks through the Link gauge, chaining partner characters into Linked Artes and Dual Mystic Artes, and entering Overlimit to unleash signature finishers. The remaster rebuilds the presentation for current hardware, adds quality-of-life improvements to the battle and menu flow, and preserves the Lilium Orb progression and shop development systems of the original.

Key Systems

  • Dual Protagonists: the campaign can be led by either Jude Mathis, a medical student who becomes the party's fist-fighting healer, or Milla Maxwell, the Lord of Spirits and the party's spirit-artes caster. Character-specific scenes and sub-events differ by choice, and the two leads can be swapped between chapters.
  • Linked Artes and the Link Gauge: pair any two party members to build the Link gauge, then spend it on Link Artes and coordinated Overlimit chains that blend both characters' attacks into single devastating techniques.
  • Overlimit and Mystic Artes: filling the Overlimit gauge empowers the whole party, extends combo limits, and lets each character fire their Mystic Arte finisher, with linked partners able to combine into Dual Mystic Artes.
  • Lilium Orb Progression: character growth is driven by a shared node grid rather than a fixed level curve, so GP earned in battle is spent to light nodes that grant stat boosts, new Martial Artes, Spirit Artes, and Support Skills.
  • Spirit Artes and Elemental Pacts: Milla's pacts with the four great spirits give the party fire, water, wind, and earth elemental coverage, while every caster manages TP reserves consumed by spells and restored by gels and support skills.
  • Shop Development: each store in Rieze Maxia grows as the party spends money there, unlocking stronger stock, new arte books, and better equipment tiers as its rank rises.
  • Guard, Link Styles, and Partner AI: guards reduce damage and fuel the Link gauge, and each linked partner's behaviour is tuned by the Link Style assigned to them, from offensive assault to defensive healing.

Accolades
Frequently cited as one of the strongest entries of the Tales series for its dual-protagonist structure, the Link Artes battle system, and Motoi Sakuraba's score; the 2025 remaster brought the game to modern platforms with a rebuilt presentation.
