Tales of Berseria Remastered

Tales of Berseria Remastered is a remastered release of the 2016 action RPG Tales of Berseria, developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC. The story follows Velvet Crowe, a young woman transformed into a daemon with a devouring arm on the night her brother was sacrificed, who escapes the prison island of Titania and gathers a crew of misfits to hunt the man responsible: Artorius Collbrande, Shepherd of the Abbey and her own brother-in-law. Where most Tales games build their theme around a band of heroes saving the world, Berseria runs the argument the other way, framing the Abbey's cold logic and suppression of emotion against Velvet's raw, vengeful feeling, with the player squarely on the side of the villain of the world's official history. Combat uses the Liberation Linear Motion Battle System, a free-roaming real-time system built on the Soul Gauge, character-specific Break Souls, arte trees, switching reserve fighters mid-combo with Switch Blast, and cinematic Mystic Artes. The remaster rebuilds the presentation for current hardware and preserves the original's equipment mastery, title, Katz expedition, cooking, and Code Red hunt systems. It sits in the same continuity as Tales of Zestiria, telling the distant-past story of the world Zestiria inherits.

Key Systems

  • Soul Gauge and Souls: Souls are the battle economy. The party starts with three, earns more by landing hits, breaking guards, and defeating enemies, and loses them when characters are knocked out, up to a maximum of five that can be spent on Break Souls or saved for longer combo chains.
  • Break Souls: Each party member has a unique Break Soul that costs one Soul and changes how they fight, from Velvet's Consuming Claw that devours enemies to restore health and gain power, to healing, counter, and area-denial Break Souls for the rest of the cast. Managing Souls so the right Break Soul is always available is the core combat skill.
  • Liberation Linear Motion Battle System: Combat is free-roaming and real-time, with a basic attack chain followed by artes bound to the four face buttons, aerial attacks, guarding, and dodges. Longer chains scale damage and arte effects, so the system rewards aggression over turtling.
  • Arte Trees and Arte Types: Martial Artes, Hidden Artes, and Malak Artes sit in per-character arte trees that open as artes are used, with each entry upgraded by repeating it in battle rather than buying levels.
  • Switch Blast: Spending the Blast Gauge swaps a reserve party member into the fight with an immediate arte, keeping combos alive and letting a benched character fire their own Break Soul and Mystic Arte without swapping the whole formation.
  • Equipment Mastery and Titles: Weapons, armour, and accessories teach passive skills as they are used, so gear is farmed for the skills it grants and then enhanced for raw stats. Equipped titles provide another layer of stat and skill bonuses tied to story progression.
  • Katz Korner, Cooking, and Code Red Hunts: The Katz Korner trades and dispatches Katz on timed expeditions for materials, cooking meals grant party-wide buffs, and Code Red daemons are optional elite hunts that gate some of the best rewards.

Reception

Critics
Generally favourable reviews on release; commonly named one of the strongest modern Tales entries for Velvet's cast, the emotion-versus-reason premise, and a combat system built around the Soul Gauge and Break Souls.
Series Context
The remaster brings the 2016 PlayStation 4 and PC title to current consoles and PC in the same remaster programme that produced Tales of Graces f Remastered and Tales of Xillia Remastered.
Player Reception
The story's inversion of the usual Tales hero framing and Velvet's character arc are the most frequently praised elements, while the linear dungeon design remains the most criticised.
