Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is a 2025 role-playing simulation game developed and published by Marvelous, a spin-off of the Rune Factory series that moves the farming-and-fighting formula east to the mountainous land of Azuma. The player becomes an Earth Dancer who wakes in Spring Village without their memory after the Celestial Collapse, an object that fell from the sky and disrupted the land's magical runes, and must restore Azuma's gods while purifying the Blight spread by a black dragon. Alongside the series' farming, crafting, and monster-battling loop, the game adds village development (placing farmland, buildings, and decorations and assigning work to villagers), party-based action combat with recruitable companions, and Sacred Treasures that benefit both combat and daily life. It released for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Windows on June 5, 2025, and arrived on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 13, 2026.

Key Systems

  • Earth Dancer and Rune Restoration: The player is an Earth Dancer, a figure able to restore the magical runes of Azuma. The main campaign is a tour of the land's gods, repairing their shrines and returning their divine power after the Celestial Collapse broke the rune network.
  • Seasonal Zones of Azuma: Azuma is divided into seasonal zones, each with its own environment and festivals, so the calendar and the landscape change as the story moves from the spring quarter outward.
  • Sacred Treasures: Equippable treasures with effects that work both in combat and in daily life, giving the farming and fighting halves of the game a shared upgrade path.
  • Village Development: Certain areas are fully customizable, letting players place farmland, buildings, and decorative items, and assign chores to villagers instead of farming by hand.
  • Skill Trees: Farming, crafting, gathering, fishing, cooking, and combat all award experience that is spent in skill trees, so everyday chores fund the same progression pool as dungeon runs.
  • Party Combat and Companion Recruitment: Characters recruited through the expanded social system join the player in combat, turning relationship building into a party-building route as well as a romance route.
  • Relationships and Romance: Romance options are available regardless of the player character's gender, and the protagonist not chosen at the start of the game becomes the black dragon's rider.
