Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a 2025 action role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Part of the ninth generation of the Pokémon series, it is a sequel to Pokémon X and Y and the second entry in the Pokémon Legends sub-series after Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The entire adventure takes place in the Kalos region's Lumiose City, five years after Team Flare's attack, during an urban redevelopment project that creates Wild Zones where people and Pokémon coexist. The player enters the citywide Z-A Royale tournament, rises from Rank Z to Rank A, and joins Team MZ to quell Rogue Mega Evolutions, mysterious wild Pokémon that spontaneously Mega Evolve and go berserk. The game replaces turn-based combat with a real-time battle system built around positioning, timing, and dodging, alongside Mega Evolution, Wild Zone exploration, rooftop exploration, and competitive multiplayer.

Key Systems

  • Real-Time Battles - Combat is no longer turn-based. The player character and their Pokémon move around the arena, dodge incoming attacks, and land moves based on positioning and timing against opposing trainers and wild Pokémon.
  • Mega Evolution - Players collect Mega Energy during battle to temporarily Mega Evolve their active Pokémon, unleashing boosted stats and signature Mega moves against tough opponents.
  • Wild Zones - Lumiose City's redevelopment carved out green Wild Zones where wild Pokémon roam freely and players can sneak up on them, catch them, and fight them in the real-time system.
  • Z-A Royale - A citywide tournament where trainers climb from the lowest Rank Z to the top Rank A via promotion battles in nighttime Battle Zones, with the winner granted a wish by Quasartico Inc. Pre-emptive strikes can stun opponents and your own Pokémon.
  • Rogue Mega Evolution - A mysterious phenomenon where wild Pokémon Mega Evolve on their own and go berserk after exposure to concentrated Mega Power from the Prism Tower's Ange device. Players fight them in real-time boss battles to earn Mega Stones.
  • Battle Club Multiplayer - Up to four players take part in timed Link Battles or Ranked Battles, earning rank points and exclusive Mega Stones, with connectivity to Pokémon Home cloud storage.
