Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is a 2025 first-person action-adventure game developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the tenth mainline Metroid game and a direct continuation of the Prime subseries, set chronologically between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. Players control bounty hunter Samus Aran, who is drawn to the planet Viewros to investigate and stop a new threat tied to rogue bounty hunter Sylux and his revitalized Space Pirate army. Gameplay blends the series' signature visor-based scanning, first-person combat, and ability-gated exploration with new psychic powers that let Samus manipulate objects and control enemies. Retro rebuilt and upgraded its internal engine for the release, with enhanced lighting and higher-fidelity visuals on Switch 2.

Key Systems

  • Visor and Scan System — Sample creatures, relics, and environments through the Combat and Scan Visors to uncover lore, enemy weaknesses, and progression clues, a cornerstone of the Prime style of play.
  • Psychic Abilities — New psychic powers let Samus interact with the world beyond her arm cannon, including the Psychic Visor, Psychic Glove, Psychic Lasso, Psychic Boots, and the mind-probing Control Beam that can take command of alien machinery and creatures.
  • Ability-Gated Exploration — The morph ball, visors, and a galaxy of unlocked upgrades gate routes and secrets across Viewros, rewarding backtracking and careful scanning to expand Samus's arsenal and reach.
  • First-Person Combat Arsenal — A charging beam, missile and super missile ordinance, morph ball bombs, and power bombs form the combat core, with an enhanced lock-on and dodge flow carried over from the Prime trilogy.
  • Switch 2 Enhanced Presentation — Retro's upgraded internal engine delivers sharper geometry, improved lighting, and optional enhanced rendering on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
