The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero is a turn-based Japanese role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom and the opening chapter of the Crossbell arc, originally released on the PlayStation Portable in Japan in 2010 and brought to the West by NIS America in 2022. The story follows Lloyd Bannings, a rookie detective who returns to the autonomous city-state of Crossbell after years of study abroad and is placed in charge of the newly created Special Support Section. With Elie MacDowell, Tio Plato and Randy Orlando, Lloyd takes on police requests that drag the unit into the rivalry between the Erebonian Empire and the Calvard Republic and into the criminal syndicates that profit from Crossbell's dependence. The game carries the Trails in the Sky battle system forward with Crafts, S-Crafts and the ENIGMA orbment, and it adds the Master Quartz concept, the Burst and Team Rush team mechanics and a Detective Point ranking for requests. Current-generation PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 editions released on 10 September 2026.

Key Systems

  • Craft and S-Craft combat. Every party member fights with Crafts that spend CP (Craft Points) and a signature S-Craft, and an S-Break can interrupt the turn order to fire an S-Craft the instant a character reaches 100 CP.
  • Team mechanics from the Crossbell arc. Burst lets the whole party spend a shared gauge to act together outside the turn order, and Team Rush combines the active party into a single massed attack on one target.
  • Orbal Arts and EP. Spells are assembled in each character's orbment and cast from an EP pool, which makes party magic a matter of equipment and quartz setup rather than fixed character spell lists.
  • Quartz and Master Quartz. Seven elemental quartz types (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Time, Space and Mirage) slot into orbment lines, and the central Master Quartz unit grants a character-defining passive effect that levels up as the party fights.
  • Detective Points and requests. The Special Support Section works from a request board, and completed police requests and support requests award Detective Points that raise the unit's rank and open up rewards, a Crossbell variation on the Bracer Guild's point system.
  • Crossbell as a political pressure cooker. The SSS reports to a police hierarchy that distrusts it while the empire, the republic, the bank and the syndicates all treat the state as a bargaining chip, so almost every request doubles as a piece of the larger story.
  • Modern port quality of life. The PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 editions carry the refresh features of the later Japanese re-releases, including a high-speed mode that accelerates field movement, battles and dialogue.
