Mewgenics

Mewgenics is a tactical role-playing roguelike combined with a deep cat breeding life simulation, created by acclaimed indie developers Edmund McMillen (The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy) and Tyler Glaiel (The End is Nigh, Closure). Players move into a dilapidated house in the peculiar town of Boon County, managing generational lineages of feline warriors. Between expeditions, players care for, feed, medicate, breed, and house their clowder of cats—passing down alleles, physical mutations, rare disorders, and elemental afflictions across complex genetic trees. On expeditions, players deploy squads of up to four collared cats into turn-based tactical battles on procedurally generated grids featuring destructible cover, environmental hazards, elevation, knockback physics, and a blood/plasma recovery mechanic. Developed with a bespoke engine powered by SDL3 and featuring a dynamic, dark-folk soundtrack by RIDICULON, Mewgenics delivers hundreds of unique abilities, over 100 thematic item sets, 14 classes, and branching multi-act campaigns.

Key Systems

  • Grid-Based Tactical Combat — Turn-based battles on procedural square/hex grids where positioning, knockback into hazards, elevation, line-of-sight, and facing determine tactical victory.
  • Generational Cat Genetics & Breeding — Complex Mendelian genetics engine tracking dominant/recessive alleles, body types, cosmetic coats, physical mutations (extra limbs, horns, giant paws), mental disorders, and parasites across generations.
  • Class Collars & Ability Drafting — 14 total classes (Collarless starter plus 13 specialized class collars) that apply stat modifiers and shape the card draft pools offered upon cat level-ups.
  • Equipment & 3-Piece Item Set Bonuses — 5 equipment slots per cat (Weapon, Head, Face, Neck, Trinket/Consumable). Assembling 3 matching pieces triggers powerful set synergies; Tinkerer passives reduce the requirement.
  • Item Wear & Durability Risk — Gear brought on adventures becomes 'worn'; taking worn gear on back-to-back runs carries a 50% risk of breaking upon returning home, requiring tactical equipment rotation.
  • Plasma Meter Aggressive Recovery — Damage dealt builds a plasma gauge, and checkpoint-refilled Healing Vials restore health only up to the level of the plasma meter, rewarding aggressive engagements.
  • Branching Multi-Act Campaigns — Expeditions structured across 3-chapter runs through distinct biomes (The Alley, The Sewers, The Caves, The Junkyard, The Boneyard, The Bunker, The Core, The Crater, The Moon) with high-risk hard branches.
  • Boon County House & NPC Favor — Expand house facilities with Frank, trade mutations with Dr. Beanies, unlock collars and storage with Butch, buy supplies and blank collars from Tracy, sell kittens to Tink, furnish rooms with Baby Jack, and recover lost run gear via the Organ Grinder.
  • Secret Quests & Endgames — Multi-phase secret quests such as defeating the house boss Guillotina to collect relics and perform a feline blood sacrifice to unlock The Throbbing Domain.
