Metaphor: ReFantazio

Metaphor: ReFantazio is a Japanese role-playing game developed by Studio Zero, a subsidiary of Atlus, and published by Atlus in Japan and Sega worldwide. It launched worldwide on October 11, 2024 for Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X/S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version following on November 12, 2026. Set in the fantasy United Kingdom of Euchronia, the story follows a young Elda boy who, after the king is assassinated and the crown prince is cursed into an eternal slumber, sets out with his fairy companion Gallica aboard an airship called the Gauntlet Runner to break the curse and compete in a nationwide election to decide the next sovereign. Gameplay blends the studio's signature calendar-driven social simulation with a turn-based combat system built on exploiting enemy weaknesses for extra turns, a deep Archetype job class system, follower bonds, and real-time active combat in the overworld.

Key Systems

  • Turn-Based Combat with Turn Icons: Battles award turn icons based on party size; striking an enemy weakness grants a bonus icon, while attacks that miss or are absorbed cost icons, rewarding exploitation of elemental and weapon weaknesses.
  • Archetype Class System: Characters level and equip Archetypes, forty-six heroic job classes spanning basic and advanced lineages, each tied to a follower bond and granting unique skills and stat growth.
  • Calendar and Deadlines: The story runs on a real-time calendar with a fixed countdown to the election, forcing players to ration days between main quests, follower bonds, and exploration.
  • Royal Virtues: Five virtues (Wisdom, Courage, Tolerance, Eloquence, Imagination) level up through dialogue and activities and gate many social options and follower ranks.
  • Follower Bonds: Twenty bonded companions grant Archetype lineages, passive skills, and battle enhancements as their bond ranks rise, echoing a social-link structure.
  • Synthesis Skills: Two allies can combine their Archetype abilities into powerful combo skills, consuming additional turn icons for heavy elemental or support effects.
  • Real-Time Overworld Combat: Weaker foes can be dispatched in real time before entering the turn-based battle proper, speeding up grinding and exploration.
  • Igniter System: Equippable magic igniters let characters cast spells without a Mage, consuming fuel that replenishes and heats with use, adding a management layer to magic.
