Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a 2025 hack-and-slash action RPG developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo, the tenth mainline entry and a ground-up reboot of the beloved Musou series. Based on the Chinese classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the game re-centers the story on a single amnesiac protagonist named Ziluan, the nameless Wanderer, who plays a decisive role across the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the fall of the Han Dynasty. Combat swaps the series' sprawling roster of interchangeable warriors for one deeply customizable hero wielding ten distinct weapon types, each with its own Battle Arts, proficiency ranks, and refinement paths. A branching campaign lets the Wanderer bind their fate to Liu Bei, Cao Cao, or Sun Jian, unlocking different battles, bonds, and two endings per route. Upon release the game earned generally positive reviews for its spectacle and mechanical focus and sold over one million units by February 2025, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version and the Visions of Four Heroes DLC arriving worldwide on January 22, 2026.

Key Systems

  • Bravery Combat — Building and landing normal and charge attacks fills the Bravery gauge; Bravery points are spent to fire Battle Arts and special techniques, rewarding aggressive, readable offense over mashing.
  • Ten Weapon Types with Proficiency — The Wanderer can master Sword, Spear, Gauntlets, Wheels, Podao, Staff, Twin Pikes, Lance, Crescent Blade, and the post-game Halberd, each with unique move sets, Proficiency ranks, weapon grades 1-8, traits, and a Reforging system unlocked after the campaign.
  • Battle Arts — Cooldown and Bravery-based abilities bound to each weapon type that can break enemy blocks, counter unblockable attacks, and disperse formations; some (Sp.) arts stagger foes and cut through enemy techniques.
  • Musou Gauge, Officer Switch & Extreme Musou — Filling the Musou gauge unleashes a screen-clearing ultimate, while bonded officers with a full gauge can be controlled directly, trigger musou rage, and combine with the Wanderer in a linked Extreme Musou.
  • Companion System & Bonds — Ten unlockable officer companions (plus the post-campaign Lu Bu) can be fielded; standing near a companion triggers chain Battle Arts, and deepening bonds unlocks new story scenes, abilities, and assist options.
  • Morale & Tactical Command — Large forces sway by enemy morale; the Wanderer issues orders to allied units and can break opposition by toppling officers or charging commanders directly.
  • Branching Storyline — The Wanderer must identify the hero destined to unite China, choosing to follow Liu Bei, Cao Cao, or Sun Jian; each path changes available battles and companions and splits into true and classic endings.
