Megabonk

Megabonk is a fast-paced action roguelike built around overwhelming enemy hordes, absurd stacking upgrades, and short escalating runs. Developed and published by the solo developer Vedinad, it launched on Windows and Linux on September 18, 2025 and became one of the breakout indie hits of the year, selling a million copies within two weeks. A run starts on a chosen stage and tier, throws endless waves of enemies at the player, and asks them to grab loot, level up, and shape a build out of weapons, tomes, passive items, and stackable stats before the stage boss finally shows up. Between runs, unlocks are bought with Silver earned in play: new characters, weapons, tomes, items, and map tiers each sit behind their own in-game quest, so progression is a long checklist of challenges and hidden objectives. The game is famous for its jokey tone, deliberately rough low-poly look, tiny install size, and a Steam system requirement table that lists the processor as "potato".

Key Systems

  • Survivors-style Run Loop: a run drops the player onto a stage and tier with auto-attacking weapons, spawning ever larger enemy waves until the stage boss is triggered and beaten.
  • Weapons, Tomes and Items: builds are assembled from weapons that fire on their own, stat-boosting Tomes with per-level values, and rarer Items that add unique effects and weapon upgrade lines.
  • Level-Up Upgrade Offers: killing enemies grants XP gems, and each level presents a choice of weapon, tome, or item upgrades that can be rerolled and locked toward a plan.
  • Stackable Stats: damage multiplier, attack speed, projectile count, size, duration, cooldown, knockback, crit chance and damage, lifesteal, thorns, armor, evasion, HP, HP regen, pickup range, movement speed, XP gain, and luck all stack across a run.
  • Unlock Quests and the Unlocks Menu: characters, weapons, tomes, and items are purchased with Silver only after completing specific in-game objectives, from hidden map events to cumulative kill counts.
  • Stage Tiers and Progression: Forest, Desert, and Graveyard each have higher tiers gated behind stage objectives, with tougher enemies, tighter timers, and better rewards.
  • Challenges: map-based challenge runs with modified rules are the unlock path for several characters and weapons, and completing them is tracked separately from normal clears.
  • Bosses, Portals and Boss Curse: bosses are found through boss portals marked by red threads, and the Boss Curse mechanic raises difficulty in exchange for better rewards.
  • Interactables, Shrines and Chests: campfires, microwaves, Charge Shrines, Greed Shrines, Moai Statues, Boomboxes, Gold Keys and cages, free and paid chests, and roaming shady merchants all feed the run.
  • Post-Launch Spooky Update: the December 2025 Spooky update added the Graveyard stage with Crypt Keys, the Roberto character, the Scythe weapon, and new items.
