Yakuza Kiwami
Yakuza Kiwami is a full remake of the 2005 PlayStation 2 original, rebuilt by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by Sega for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan in 2016 and worldwide in 2017, with a 2025 re-release for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. The story opens in 1995, when Kazuma Kiryu, a rising enforcer in the Dojima Family, takes the blame for the murder of his own boss to protect his sworn brother Akira Nishikiyama, and returns to Kamurocho ten years later to find the Tojo Clan short ten billion yen with a young girl named Haruka holding the only clue to where the money went. Combat is a free-roaming beat 'em up built on four switchable fighting styles, environmental weapon pickups and cinematic Heat Actions, and the remake adds Majima Everywhere, a running series of ambushes by Goro Majima that unlocks the later nodes of the Dragon of Dojima style. Around the main story sits a large side content suite, with dozens of substories, Pocket Circuit racing, the MesuKing bug battle card game, karaoke, hostess clubs and the Purgatory coliseum.
Key Systems
- Four Fighting Styles: Kiryu switches freely between Brawler for balanced boxing, Rush for fast crowd-dodging footwork, Beast for heavy grabs and thrown furniture, and the unlockable Dragon of Dojima style that blends all three.
- Heat Actions: landing hits, grabbing enemies and finishing combos fills the Heat gauge, which pays for context-sensitive cinematic finishers that use walls, railings, bicycles, signs and other street furniture as weapons.
- Majima Everywhere: Goro Majima ambushes Kiryu across Kamurocho in scripted and random encounters, and ranking up through the encounters unlocks the late Dragon of Dojima upgrades.
- Weapon Pickups and Durability: katanas, pipes, tonfas, handguns and shotguns are bought from vendors or taken from enemies and degrade as they are used, keeping any single weapon temporary.
- Substories and Trouble Finder: named substories around Kamurocho can be discovered with the Trouble Finder, and completing them feeds experience into the upgrade orbs.
- Upgrade Orbs: Soul, Body and Technique orbs unlocked through Heat Actions, encounters and substories spend the experience that buys every node in the four style trees.
- Kamurocho Sandbox Minigames: Pocket Circuit racing, MesuKing bug battles, karaoke, hostess clubs, the Purgatory coliseum, Sega arcades and the full gambling suite sitting around the main story.
