System Shock

System Shock is a 2023 remake of Looking Glass Studios' 1994 immersive sim, rebuilt from the ground up by Nightdive Studios and published by Prime Matter. An unnamed hacker is caught breaking into TriOptimum's network and is blackmailed by station executive Edward Diego into removing the ethical constraints on SHODAN, the AI running Citadel Station. Six months later the hacker wakes from surgery to find the station overrun by mutants and cyborgs, with SHODAN declaring herself a god. The remake keeps the original's deck-by-deck station structure while modernising the shooting, adding a hardware upgrade system, redesigned cyberspace sequences and a fully voiced station of audio logs. After its 2023 PC and console launch it arrived on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in December 2025.

Key Systems

  • Immersive Sim Problem Solving: Every deck is a puzzle box with several valid routes. Doors can be opened by hacking panels, by finding keycards and codes in audio logs, by repairing hardware, or by entering cyberspace and destroying the ICE node that locks them, and the game never forces one solution.
  • SHODAN as an Active Antagonist: The station AI taunts the hacker through every deck, reroutes security, locks bulkheads, spawns respawning enemies and speaks directly to the player, turning the environment itself into the main villain rather than a passive backdrop.
  • Deck by Deck Station Structure: Citadel Station is climbed one deck at a time, from Medical through Research, Maintenance, Storage, Flight Deck, Executive, Reactor, Bridge and Engineering, with a central elevator hub and back-tracking once new hardware opens old doors.
  • Cyberspace: Jacking into cyberspace drops the player into a wireframe arena where they steer a cursor through data nodes, fight ICE programs and destroy the nodes that unlock physical doors and disable station systems.
  • Hardware Upgrades: The remake's hardware system installs permanent body and weapon modules such as targeting assistance, environmental protection, extra inventory space and improved energy capacity, found as chips and installed at stations rather than bought with currency.
  • Hacking and Security Network: Security cameras, turrets and locked containers are tied to a station security level. Hacking a panel triggers a timed puzzle and raises alert, while destroying cameras and nodes lowers it, so stealth and violence both feed the same escalating system.
  • Audio Logs and Environmental Storytelling: The station's fate is told through the logs of TriOptimum staff, Diego's scheming and Lansing's remote guidance, with codes, safe combinations and door overrides hidden inside the recordings.
  • Granular Difficulty: Combat, mission, puzzle and cyberspace each have their own difficulty dial, so players can keep the story and puzzles intact while making combat trivial, or the reverse.
