Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal is Atlus' expanded version of Persona 5, the 2016 role-playing game from the company's P-Studio team, published by Atlus in Japan and Sega worldwide. The story follows Ren Amamiya, a high school student on probation after being falsely charged with assault, who is sent to Tokyo to live above a coffee shop in Yongen-Jaya and attends Shujin Academy for a year. There he awakens to a rebellious Persona, meets the other founding members of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, and enters the cognitive Palaces of corrupt adults to steal their distorted desires, while a mysterious app on his phone turns the city into the explorable dungeon called Mementos. The game alternates between turn-based battles built on elemental weaknesses, One More turns, Baton Passes and All-Out Attacks, and a calendar-driven social sim where school, part-time jobs, Confidants and stat-raising activities consume the same limited days as dungeon runs. Royal adds a new party member, a new Confidant, the Thieves Den, Showtime attacks, Will Seeds and an extended third semester that continues past the original ending, and it is the version that has been ported to every modern platform.
Key Systems
- Palace Infiltration and Calling Cards - Each arc targets one corrupt adult whose distorted cognition forms a Palace, and the Phantom Thieves must secure a route to the Treasure, send a calling card to materialize it, and escape with it before the owner's shadow can stop them.
- Turn-Based Weakness Combat - Hitting an enemy's elemental weakness or landing a critical knocks it down and grants a One More turn, downing the whole group enables an All-Out Attack, and Baton Pass hands the extra turn to a teammate with a damage bonus that scales as the Confidant rank rises.
- Confidants and Social Stats - Twenty-plus Confidants advance through spending time with them, and each rank grants concrete combat or utility perks, from cheaper fusion to stronger Baton Passes and shop discounts, while five social stats gate which answers and Confidants are available.
- Persona Fusion in the Velvet Room - The protagonist is a Wild Card who collects Personas in battle and fuses them at the Velvet Room, inheriting skills, registering them to the compendium and using Strength Confidant executions to itemize or boost them.
- Calendar and Daily Life - The school year runs from April to the following spring, and every day splits into slots for school, afternoons and evenings, so scheduling time between Palaces, Mementos requests, jobs and Confidants is the real resource management layer.
- Mementos and Requests - The city's collective unconscious appears as a subway-like dungeon whose floors deepen with story progress, and Confidant requests send the party in to change the heart of a specific minor target.
- Showtime Attacks and Traits - Royal adds paired Showtime finishers between specific party members, plus Persona Traits that pass a passive identity to fusions and Third Awakening upgrades that turn each party Persona into its ultimate form.
- Will Seeds and the Thieves Den - Each Palace hides three Will Seeds that combine into an accessory, and the Thieves Den is a hub where cleared content unlocks art, music, costumes and challenge battles outside the main story.
- Third Semester - Royal's added arc runs past the original finale, introducing Kasumi Yoshizawa and the school counselor Takuto Maruki as full Confidants and opening a new Palace and ending path once certain conditions are met before the December deadline.
