MIO: Memories in Orbit
MIO: Memories in Orbit is a hand-drawn Metroidvania developed by Douze Dixièmes and published by Focus Entertainment, released on January 20, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Players control MIO, a nimble android who wakes inside the Vessel, an enormous technological ark overgrown with machines that have gone rogue, and sets out to learn what happened to the ark and to the memories stored inside it. Traversal is built around the Hairpin grapple, which pulls MIO toward energy shards, enemies and bosses, and around abilities recovered from the ark's guardians that gradually reopen routes which were previously out of reach. Combat is precise 2D action with dashes, deflects and aerial follow-ups, and the upgrade layer runs through an Allocation Matrix, ability Mods and Mod Extensions paid for with harvested Nacre. Eighteen bosses and roughly 25 areas make up the campaign, which runs past 25 hours for a full clear.
Key Systems
- Hairpin Grapple - MIO's signature traversal tool pulls her toward energy shards, enemies and bosses, and also works as an airstall to hold position or reset momentum. It spends the entire energy bar in one shot, so every grapple is a commitment that has to be planned around the recharge.
- Metroidvania ability gating - The Vessel opens up as MIO recovers abilities such as the Hairpin grapple, the double jump, the dash and deflect, gliding, arachnid wall and ceiling locomotion, and the Striders' climbing kit, each of which reopens routes that were previously blocked and turns old areas into new shortcuts.
- Allocation Matrix - Upgrade points earned in the Vessel are spent through an allocation matrix that shapes MIO's stats, so the order in which the matrix is filled is one of the game's core build decisions rather than a flat power curve.
- Modifications and Mod Extensions - Mods found and bought across the Vessel change the behaviour of MIO's abilities, while Mod Extensions add extra slots so that more of those modifiers can be stacked at the same time.
- Nacre economy - Crystallised Nacre is the game's currency. It is harvested from the environment and from defeated creatures, banked at Nacre Basins and spent at vendors such as Mel's shop on upgrades, mods and consumables.
- Harvester and material collection - The Harvester ability lets MIO extract materials from fallen creatures, feeding the upgrade economy alongside Nacre and the hidden logs scattered through the ark.
- Boss-driven progression - Eighteen bosses, including optional and secret encounters, guard the Vessel's key abilities and items, and several of them are tied to specific areas such as the Refinery chases and the Spine.
- Hand-drawn world and long campaign - The Vessel is drawn by hand and layered with environmental storytelling, and a full playthrough runs beyond 25 hours, with secrets, hidden logs and upgrades rewarding systematic backtracking.
