Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is an isometric, turn-based CRPG developed and published by Owlcat Games, released for PC on December 7, 2023 and for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on December 11, 2025. It is set in the Koronus Expanse, a lawless frontier region of the Imperium reachable only through the dangerous Koronus Passage, where the player is invested as the new Rogue Trader of House von Valancius after the death of Theodora von Valancius. A Warrant of Trade makes the player a sovereign power in all but name, so the campaign mixes dungeon-crawling combat with trade, colony administration, voidship warfare and diplomacy between the Imperium, the Aeldari, the Drukhari and the Koronus underworld. Combat is grid-based and cover-driven with action points, momentum and warp peril, while character building runs from four base archetypes into advanced and Exemplar tiers. The game was the first Warhammer 40,000 CRPG from Owlcat and drew praise for the depth of its build crafting and its fidelity to the setting.
Key Systems
- Archetype Progression: every character starts as a Warrior, Officer, Soldier or Operative, then branches into an advanced archetype such as Assassin, Bounty Hunter, Arch-Militant, Master Tactician, Grand Strategist or Vanguard, with the Exemplar tier layering a second talent ladder on top of the first.
- Momentum and Veil Degradation: the party shares a Momentum pool that fills with kills and heroic plays and is spent on Heroic Acts, while psykers and warp powers push Veil Degradation upward and eventually let warp entities manifest inside the fight.
- Conviction: dialogue and quest choices move the Rogue Trader along the Dogmatic, Iconoclast and Heretical axes, unlocking exclusive options, gear and ending states rather than a simple good and evil split.
- Colony Management: the von Valancius protectorate's worlds, including Dargonus, Janus, Kiava Gamma and Foulstone, are developed through projects that pay out resources, reputation and story consequences between chapters.
- Voidship Combat: ship-to-ship battles are fought on their own turn-based grid with macrocannons, lance batteries, torpedoes and augur scans, and the flagship's loadout is upgraded with components bought or looted across the Expanse.
- Warp Travel and the Navigator: jumps between systems are steered by the Navigator Cassia Orsellio, with warp encounters, perils and route risk that scale with how far the player pushes into uncharted space.
- Companion Relationships: eleven recruitable companions carry personal quests, loyalty arcs and ending states, and their presence in the party shapes both camp scenes and the final choices of the campaign.
- Profit Factor and Reputation: gear and services are paid for out of a Profit Factor pool rather than coin, and standing with factions such as the Drusians, the Explorators, the Kasballica Mission and the Fellowship of the Seal unlocks their traders and rewards.
- Cover-Based Tactical Combat: fights run on a grid with action points, line of sight, cover, overwatch and abilities that shred or ignore cover, so positioning and hazard placement matter as much as raw damage.
