Ghost of Yotei
Ghost of Yotei is a 2025 open-world action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 5. Directed by Nate Fox and Jason Connell, it is a standalone follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima set in 1603, 329 years after Jin Sakai's story, in the northern lands of Ezo (modern Hokkaido) around Mount Yotei. Players control Atsu, a mercenary who returns sixteen years after the Yotei Six, a masked criminal syndicate led by Lord Saito, slaughtered her family, and hunts each of the six across the wilds of Ezo. Combat expands the series' swordplay into five distinct melee weapon styles (Katana, Dual Katana, Odachi, Yari and Kusarigama), each with its own technique tree, supported by bows, a matchlock rifle, throwables, charms, armour and a recruitable wolf companion.
Key Systems
- Five-Weapon Melee Combat: Atsu fights with five distinct melee weapons, the Katana (unlocked as the Wolf Blade), Dual Katana, Odachi, Yari spear and Kusarigama, each carrying its own moveset, upgrade path and technique tree, and each strongest against specific enemy weapon types.
- Revenge Card Structure: The campaign is framed as a hunt for the Yotei Six, with the player free to pursue the masked outlaws in the order they choose; clearing each target's Revenge card uncovers their camps, strongholds and lieutenants across Ezo.
- Skill Trees and Techniques: Every melee weapon has its own technique tree (8 Katana techniques, 8 Dual Katana techniques, 9 Odachi techniques, plus Yari and Kusarigama trees), supplemented by Spirit Techniques learned from Dueling Trees found in the world.
- Wolf Pack Companions: Story allies such as Jubei and Oyuki can accompany Atsu, and a wolf companion unlocked through wolf dens joins fights, with its own skill track improved by returning to dens and listening to its song.
- Ranged and Throwable Arsenal: Bows (the Hankyu medium bow and the Yumi longbow), the Tanegashima rifle, kunai throwing daggers, plus fire bombs and flash bombs acquired from merchants and craftspeople such as Ina the Bomb Maker in the Ishikari Plain.
- Charms and Armour Synergy: Dozens of major and minor charms are found by bowing at shrines, completing quests and looting, and they slot into charm categories that strengthen the matching armour set the more charms of that category are equipped.
- Open World of Ezo: Six main regions, the Yotei Grasslands, Tokachi Range, Ishikari Plain, Nayoro Wilds, Teshio Ridge and Oshima Coast, filled with Altars of Reflection, hot springs, bamboo strikes, Inari shrine fox dens, hidden shrines and Yotei Six camps.
- Ghost of Yotei Legends: A free post-launch online co-op mode for up to four players (PlayStation Plus required for online play) that reimagines the story as a darker, more mythical experience with four playable classes.
- Watanabe Mode: An optional cinematic presentation mode named for anime director Shinichiro Watanabe, with its own soundtrack treatments, offered alongside the game's photo mode.
