Gears of War: E-Day

Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person shooter developed by The Coalition in collaboration with People Can Fly and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is the sixth mainline installment in the Gears of War series, released on October 6, 2026 for Windows and Xbox Series X/S. Set fourteen years before the events of the original Gears of War, the game takes place on Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first erupts from beneath the planet Sera. Players control a young Marcus Fenix alongside Dominic Santiago as the two veterans, forced back into combat, join fellow Gears Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes to form Bravo Squad and fight to survive the fall of Kalona. The campaign is built around cover-based combat expanded with a redesigned movement system, while multiplayer returns with 4v4 competitive modes and the all-new twelve-player cooperative Horde Siege. Built in Unreal Engine 5 with hardware ray tracing and MegaLights, it was one of the best-reviewed Gears games since Gears of War 3.

Key Systems

  • Emergence Day Setting — Fourteen years before the original Gears of War, the campaign depicts humanity's first encounter with the Locust Horde as it erupts from beneath the planet Sera, chronicling the opening hours of the Locust War in the industrial city of Kalona.
  • Cover-Based Combat With Redesigned Movement — The signature cover system returns alongside a rebuilt movement suite (slide, vault, climb, low-ground cover) that adds mobility and verticality while preserving the series' signature weight.
  • Bravo Squad & Never Fight Alone — The campaign focuses entirely on the four-member Bravo Squad (Marcus, Dom, Mags, Lucas), all playable from the start, with squad-based mechanics encouraging coordination in a story compared to Band of Brothers.
  • Chainsaw Lancer Origin — The iconic Lancer Assault Rifle appears in its earliest form as humanity develops the chainsaw weapon during the invasion, depicted as an origin story for the series' signature armament.
  • Emergence Holes & Dynamic Destruction — Locust forces pour in through Emergence Holes that players can destroy with explosives, while Unreal Engine 5 destruction systems let cover and environments be chipped away, collapse, or sink mid-battle.
  • Three-Day Narrative Structure — The story unfolds across three themed days (fear and confusion, squad formation, and desperation), emphasizing the horror and intimacy of a sudden apocalypse.
