Rayman Legends Retold

Rayman Legends Retold is a 2D platformer developed and published by Ubisoft, a reworked edition of Rayman Legends (2013) released on October 1, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Players guide the limbless hero Rayman, his friend Globox and Viking heroine Barbara through painting-portal worlds, using helicopter hair, charged punches and wall runs to free the kidnapped Teensies. The game is built around the series' signature 4-player co-op, the flying helper Murfy who can tickle enemies and turn cranks, and the celebrated musical stages where every jump lands on the beat of a reworked soundtrack. Between levels, Lums, Lucky Tickets and the collected Creatures feed the progression, while Daily and Weekly challenges, Invasion levels, the Back to Origins bonus paintings and the Kung Foot minigame extend the campaign. Retold keeps the hand-drawn UbiArt art style of the original while adding reworked visuals and extra levels.

Key Systems

  • Painting Portals: the hub gallery is lined with painted canvases, and jumping into one opens that world, so the campaign is structured as a museum of platforming paintings.
  • Murfy Assist: the flying helper Murfy can be commanded to tickle enemies, spin cranks, move platforms and cut ropes, letting a second or third player influence levels they cannot physically reach.
  • Musical Stages: several levels are rhythm set pieces where hazards, platforms and enemies are timed to a reworked track, and mistakes break the beat rather than simply dealing damage.
  • Teensie Rescue and Lums: every painting hides caged Teensies that must be freed, while yellow Lums act as the score and currency that unlocks new content.
  • Lucky Tickets and Creatures: hidden tickets are scratched like cards to award Creatures, Lums, costumes and bonus levels, forming the game's collectible meta-progression.
  • Four-Player Co-op: up to four heroes share one screen, revive each other by touch and can drag, bounce and throw one another to reach secrets.
  • Daily and Weekly Challenges: online remixes of existing levels with global leaderboards, including never-touch-the-ground, sprint and invasion variants.
  • Kung Foot and Back to Origins: a football minigame turns the co-op brawling into a two-team sport, while the Back to Origins paintings rebuild levels from the previous game with the new roster.

Reception

Metacritic
Critically acclaimed at launch, scoring in the low 90s across platforms for the 2013 original.
Opencritic
Recommended by the overwhelming majority of critics and regularly listed among the best 2D platformers of the 2010s.
Critics
Praise centred on the hand-drawn art, the musical stages, the generous level count and the strength of the four-player co-op, with the greatest criticism aimed at the Murfy touch controls of the original release.
Legacy
The 2013 game is widely treated as the high point of the Rayman platforming series, which is why Ubisoft returned to it for this reworked edition.
