Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a 2021 turn-based role-playing game developed and published by Capcom, a direct sequel to Monster Hunter Stories and a spin-off of the Monster Hunter series. The player is a young Rider, grandchild of the legendary Rider Red, living on Hakolo Island when a Wyverian girl named Ena arrives with a Rathalos egg that hatches into the Razewing Ratha, a monster whose wings are said to bring ruin to the world. Battles are fought three against three with Riders and their Monsties fighting side by side, and the combat is organised around a Power, Speed and Technical attack triangle, head-to-head duels, double attacks and a shared Kinship gauge that unlocks cinematic Kinship Skills. Between fights the game is about exploration and collection: stealing eggs from monster dens, hatching Monsties, and reshaping their abilities through the Rite of Channeling gene system. It is a lighter, more colourful counterpart to mainline Monster Hunter, aimed at a single-player story campaign that also supports two-player co-op expeditions.

Key Systems

  • Power, Speed and Technical Attack Triangle: every attack a Rider or Monstie makes is one of three types, and the winning type in a clash beats the other two in a fixed rock-paper-scissors order that decides damage and knockback.
  • Head-to-Head Duels and Double Attacks: when both sides target the same opponent the battle resolves as a head-to-head duel, and picking the winning attack type lets the whole party follow up with a double attack. Correct reads are the core skill of the combat system.
  • Kinship Gauge and Ride On: attacking, duelling and using skills fills a shared gauge, and a full gauge pays for a Monstie Kinship Skill or for mounting the Monstie to fight alongside the Rider with boosted stats and a unique moveset.
  • Rite of Channeling and Gene Bingo: Monsties carry genes that grant elemental attacks, passive boosts and active skills. Channeling transfers genes between Monsties, and lining up matching genes in a bingo pattern unlocks bonus effects.
  • Monster Dens and Egg Collecting: dens are small randomised dungeons entered from the world map, and the eggs inside hatch into Monsties with inherited stats, elements and patterns, which is the game's collection loop.
  • Six Weapon Types: Great Sword, Hammer, Hunting Horn, Sword and Shield, Bow and Gunlance, split across Slash, Blunt and Pierce damage, so a party is built to break specific monster parts rather than to stack raw damage.
  • Monstie Elements and Part Breaking: monsters carry a fire, water, thunder, ice or dragon element and armour that breaks part by part, so element matching and part targeting matter more than raw attack on the harder fights.
  • Co-op Expeditions: two-player online dens and expedition quests let Riders bring their own Monstie teams, with drop-in quests separate from the story campaign.

Reception

Metacritic
Around 80/100 on Nintendo Switch, generally favorable reviews
Press
Critics praised the egg-collecting and gene-channeling loop, the Monstie roster and the readable head-to-head battle system, while noting the slow opening hours, the simple story and the Switch version's frame rate.
Audience
Players responded well to the collection loop and the co-op dens, and the game is generally treated as the stronger of the two Stories titles.
