Towerborne

Towerborne is a side-scrolling action RPG developed by Stoic, the studio behind The Banner Saga, and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is set in the City of Numbers, a post-apocalyptic fantasy world overwhelmed by monsters, where refugees make their way to the Belfry and the player's heroes, known as Aces, set out to reclaim the lost territories around them. Rather than locking players into a class, the game is built on swappable weapon classes and a hex-based overworld map that opens new missions and new enemy types as territory is retaken, with four-player cooperative play supported both locally and online. After a Windows Early Access launch on September 10, 2024 and an Xbox Game Preview release on April 29, 2025, Towerborne reached its full release on February 26, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X|S, arriving as a complete paid game with offline play support after the planned free-to-play model was dropped.

Key Systems

  • Weapon Classes Instead of Locked Classes: Aces pick between the Pyroclast, Rockbreaker, Sentinel and Shadowstriker weapon classes, and the game does not lock a player to any one of them, so the kit can be changed freely rather than committed to at character creation.
  • Hex-Based Overworld Map: exploration runs through a hex map in which opening hexes uncovers new mission opportunities and brings the player into contact with new enemy types.
  • The Belfry Hub: the Belfry is the hub world where Aces are customized, the surviving refugees gather, and missions are chosen before heading back out into the City of Numbers.
  • Four-Player Cooperative Play: the campaign supports both local and online co-op for up to four players, and the side-scrolling structure keeps a full party on the same screen.
  • Live-Service Content Plan: Stoic designed Towerborne as a live-service title and planned to keep adding content after the official launch.
  • Complete, Offline-Capable Release: the 1.0 launch dropped the previously announced free-to-play model in favour of a complete paid game, and added offline play support.
